The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have added athletic Small Forward Nic Trathen to their 2022 Sal’s NBL roster. Trathen, a born and bred Nelsonian, will be playing his 8th NBL season with the Giants, although he has only begun to play meaningful minutes over the past 2 campaigns.
“Nic has taken big strides over the past 2 seasons. The 2020 Showdown gave Nic a chance for big minutes and he took that opportunity and made the most of it. Last season Nic was a valuable player off the bench and made another step up in his contributions”, noted Head Coach Michael Fitchett.
One area Trathen made huge strides in was his 3-point shooting accuracy. At 45%, Trathen was the Giants best marksman from long range. This is an area Fitchett is keen to capitalise on.
“The 3-point shot is such a major factor in modern basketball that it essential to have as many shooters as possible on the floor. With Nic, Sam and Tom, we have made a great start in this area. Nic in particular showed that he can both shoot the 3 and then attack the rim when teams take that away from him. It’s pretty nice that he can finish above the rim too!”.
Trathen sees the chance to make an even greater impact this season due to the work he has put in throughout the offseason.
“I have had a good focus on improving my strength and power over the offseason. I’m seeing the results of the work I’ve done with our trainer Fletcher Matthews, finishing stronger and with more power, so I’m looking forward to using that in the League. My shooting is rounding into form and hopefully that will be at the same level as last season”.
Trathen has been around the Giants for a long time now, and this experience has been crucial for the Club through the offseason and preseason training periods.
“We have a lot of young guys training with us at the moment and it has been a new experience for me being one of the more experienced guys. I’ve worked a little on my leadership, but this is an area that I think I can still improve and give the team good value”.
Trathen averaged 9.3 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game in 16 minutes per game in 2021.
Trathen has again been sponsored by Richmond Office Products Depot. The support of our Player Sponsors is integral to the Club’s operations, and we thank the team at Richmond Office Products Depot for their continued support of the Giants and Nic.
